The start to a new season is a great time to begin your roof maintenance. It is recommended to have the roof inspected 2x a year; once in the spring and once in the fall. If roof issues are not taken care of during the fall months, the winter weather can cause more damage leaving you with costly repairs. Before the cold weather kicks in full gear, complete your fall roof maintenance checklist.

✅ Trim Trees

Tall trees around your home should be trimmed. Trees with larger branches pose a risk for the roof if not kept up with. If the large branches and twigs break and fall onto your roof, there is a high risk of damage occurring. Not only is damage a risk, but leaves can collect in the gutters causing blockages. When there are unknown blockages, rot, mold growth, and termite infestation can happen.

✅ Check the Attic

The condition of the attic can have a tremendous effect on your roof. Ensure the insulation isn’t covering the vents in the eaves. Uncovering the vents allows for proper air flow and prevents ice dams on the roof. Also, make sure there aren’t any rodents living in your attic and if you do, call in a pest control company.

✅ Inspect Roof Flashings

Aside from roof tiles and beams, the flashings are absolutely essential. Flashings are intended to seal the gaps between the joints. This is important to keep water and moisture out. Inspect the roof flashings to ensure they aren’t damaged or corroded.

✅ Clean Gutters

Having clear and clean gutters is important in keeping water off your roof. If there is a lot of build-up of debris and leaves, this creates blockages and can cause roof floods if water can’t escape. Remove all leaves, twigs, and debris from the gutters to ensure proper water flow.

✅ Replace Damaged Shingles

Typically, asphalt shingles are favored for durability, lower costs, and simple maintenance. But like with anything else, old age and harmful weather conditions eventually cause wear and tear damages. Take a look or hire a roofer to inspect the shingles on your roof. If there are missing or damaged tiles, have them replaced immediately to avoid expensive repairs.

✅ Roof Inspection

Call in a professional roof inspector to inspect your roof. They will be able to go through every inch and corner of your roof and point out areas of concern. These concerns will be pointed out to you with options to correct the problem.
